Why would a 6'1" 215 pound flat-footed guy with asthma actively decide to run a marathon?
Why would a 6'1" 215 pound flat-footed guy with asthma actively decide to run a marathon?
In Sept 2022 when I first embarked on this journey, I didn't know how mentally unprepared I was.
A combination of poor nutrition and sporadic fitness habits led to me being injured a month before the 2023 marathon last year.
I was discouraged but I realized that in order to *actually* complete this thing, I had to completely change my mindset. Especially since I was not "built" for distance running. This was out of my wheelhouse.
My entire life, two of my greatest weaknesses prior to running were discipline and consistency. This spilled over into my work. I procrastinated and pulled things together last-minute and usually it worked out pretty well - so I wasn't ever forced to change. But I always knew there was another level for me.
The process of training for this marathon has formed new habits, systems, routines and rituals. The way I approach everything has changed.
I have become methodical, consistent, paced, and chip away at massive goals each day, with the confidence that 'tomorrow Justin' is going to show up and keep laying bricks. I am accountable to myself when no one else is watching.
The huge goals I have now will require this new level of me. And I've found committing to a process for my big goals actually makes me feel less chaotic internally.
If you're masochistic enough to want to run a marathon, I couldn't recommend it more.
Just make sure you ease into training and have great nutrition!
