Value of traditional #education.
00% virtualization of #college courses has me thinking.
We need to have some uncomfortable conversations about the value of traditional #education.
In my opinion, the three primary value-adds of college campuses are:
1) The ability to form real relationships with a network of future professionals, mentors and job opportunities.
2) The opportunity to build skills in a safe incubator-type environment.
3) The social capital associated with carrying your university's name.
Virtual education significantly reduces the efficacy of 1 and 2.
For a prominent school like Harvard, the value proposition is still clear. But for lesser-known schools, can we justify the tuition costs for 'Zoom College'?
Why not take a Master Class, build a skill by watching YouTube videos and Khan Academy, or enroll in a virtual boot camp? All of these options are more cost-effective, and most of them have a better handle on virtual education than colleges.
The answer ultimately depends on a student's aspirations. However, I don't think we should universally suggest college anymore.
Either way, this conversation is long-overdue. COVID-19 has only served to make this reality more obvious.
