Katherine Johnson was one of my heroes.

Once a Hidden Figure, and now an American Legend, Katherine Johnson was one of my heroes.

She was a pioneer in #STEM long before it was widely recognized as an integral part of society.

I was able to witness her give a commencement speech at my alma mater Hampton University in 2017.

I wish I were able to tell her that seeing that speech, feeling her presence, actually is one of the reasons I carved out a career in #STEAM advocacy.

She showed me that this path was:

1) necessary and 2) possible.

We often overlook the importance of inspiration in STEM, but succeeding in these types of careers is tough. Success in these fields can be catalyzed by seeing people that look like you achieve amazing things.

Katherine was my catalyst.
